I believe that we can make a huge difference in the world by all changing small things individually....do you agree?

On that note....
I'm feeling called to write about something important today... Plastic.

I'm writing today from the health coach in me, because this matters for our heath and the health of all that inhabit the planet.

I'm writing today from the life coach in me because you feel like a much better human when you make decisions that support the health of the whole. It feels really good to make a difference where you can!

I'm writing from the human in me, because this matters, I want us all to make a difference, and I know that together we can.

I have a lot of things I'm focusing on in the new year, and one of them is consuming less plastic. I don't want to be making a negative impact on the environment, sea creatures, and wildlife for my own convenience.  I'm guessing you have seen at least a few videos online of the environmental impacts of plastic, dead sea life with bellies full pf plastic... (I watched one the other day that really hit me of someone pulling plastic bag after plastic bag out of the belly of a dead sea turtle.) if you haven't, please take some google time to explore this. It's important. In a nutshell, this is why it's so important:

"In 2014, Americans discarded about 33.6 million tons of plastic, but only 9.5 percent of it was recycled and 15 percent was combusted to create electricity or heat. Most of the rest ends up in landfills where it may take up to 500 years to decompose, and potentially leak pollutants into the soil and water. It’s estimated that there are already 165 million tons of plastic debris floating around in the oceans threatening the health and safety of marine life. And an average of 8.8 million more tons enter the oceans each year, including microplastics, tiny particles less than five millimeters long from cosmetics, fabrics or the breakdown of larger plastic pieces, which may be ingested by marine wildlife."

This is the planet that we all live on....it's all of our home.

Besides the above importance, there are also chemicals & BPA in most plastics that can be harmful to your health as well if you are consuming food & drinks out of plastic.

I've taken steps over the years to consume less plastic, and I know I can do better. I never buy plastic water bottles unless it's some kind of emergency. I take mason jars and reusable containers to my local food coop and buy as much in bulk as I can, reducing packaging. I take reusable grocery bags to the store with me. There's a lot that I do. I know I can do better, and I know we can do better as a whole! There's a lot more options than there used to be! There is reusable beeswax wrap to replace plastic wrap, and reusable produce bags, etc. In my new efforts, I realized that single use plastic produce bags were one thing that I consumed weekly, and would rather not. I started searching on how to store produce without plastic bags. I found a great article, Here: How To Store Produce Without Plastic

What this article lead me to is an AMAZING list here:

100 Steps to a Plastic-Free Life

Both of these links come from the "My Plastic Free Life"  Blog.

The above list is extensive and could feel overwhelming if you allow it to. If you want to do better about consuming less plastic for the health of the whole, my suggestion is to read the list so that you start becoming more aware of all the ways that you consume plastic. When you start to pay attention, you will be wowed by how much plastic you never even thought about. It's everywhere. Jumping into a 'plastic free life' is damn near impossible in our current world, but having more awareness puts the power in our hands to make different decisions when you have options. Pick the ones that you know you can integrate in your life. Maybe pick one at a time to work on and adjust to. Not only is this so important for all of our home here on earth.... it makes you feel like a better human too. Influence the kids around you. Influence your friends. Think about how much we could reduce more plastic going in the oceans if all of us just did even a little bit.

I care about your health. I care about the health of the planet we all inhabit. Will you join me in trying to do better? Thank you!

(**steps off of soap box......)  :)

What are some of the things that you are working on in the new year? What are some of your intentions?
I would love to hear from you :)

Wishing you a healthy & happy rest of your week!

PS- The pic above is my niece & I at one of my favorite beaches on the Olympic Peninsula over the holidays. It's absolutely magical there....and I pick up plastic to dispose of whenever I find it on the beach....because it's always there. Let's treasure our special places <3
